1935 Print Salt Caravan Ethiopia Danakil Desert Africa Euphorbia Landscape XGUA1 LHJ5 Moderate surface rubSmall tearThis is an original 1935 black and white halftone print of a salt caravan in trading wares in the Danakil Desert region of Ethiopia, Africa. The salt came from deposits in French Somaliland and had to be transported inland. The salt was formed into cylinders that resembled sponges and were wrapped in palm leaves for transport. Because salt had to be carried from great distances into the Africa interior, it was used as currency in some inland regions.
